University of Bristol

The University of Bristol is one of the most popular and academically successful universities in the UK, and is the largest employer in Bristol. With approximately 23,000 students, I would imagine that the town looks remarkably different when school is not in session.

Like the University of Pittsburgh, there is not central campus at Bristol. The university is integrated with the town, as evidenced by the pizza parlors and music shops we saw! This is definitely a college town.

The pictures in this slideshow are from the Wills Memorial Building, one of the last great Gothic structures to be built in England.  Constructed in 1915, it was dstroyed during the Bristol Blitz and rebuilt after the war.  It is considered to be the heart and soul of the university.  While we could only go as far as the entry hall, it certainly looked like a place of learning.
