A “Lying-In” Hospital

We came across this building not far from Waterloo in Southwark a few days ago. Across the top of the edifice are the words “General Lying-In Hospital”, along with “Under the Patronage of Her Majesty and the Princess of Wales”.

If you’re like me, you have no idea what a “lying in” hospital is, except that it sounds more like a relaxing spa than a place for serious medical conditions.

Luckily for me, the internet quickly disabused me of that notion. (What on earth did people do before Google, by the way?)  I soon learned that a lying-in hospital is a maternity ward! Well that makes tons of sense, since we all know that being pregnant involves a lot of laying about on fainting couches, and looking lovely and delicate, while eating lots of bon-bons, right?
